New Delhi : Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath Tuesday said he will raise with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh the issue of reducing duties on the import of Harley Davidson motorbikes from the US.

“Yes, I have written to the PM and I will be having discussions with him on the issue,” Kamal Nath said at a press conference here on being asked if he has taken up the issue with the PM.

This, according to Nath, will prove to be positive in India-US bilateral trade relationship.

In April this year, India permitted the import of Euro-III compliant and 800-cc or above engine capacity motorbikes from the US.

In return, India was allowed to export its mangoes to US markets.

The main challenge that the Harley Davidson bikes are facing in India is that of certification, as according to current rules only certified products are allowed to be sold in the Indian market.

There is no authorised body that certifies automobile standards in the US.

India levies duties of about 60 percent on imported bikes.
