Srinagar : Police Friday gunned down a top self-styled commander of Hizbul Mujaheedin terror outfit in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.

An ambush was laid by Anantnag police on specific information about the presence of a top militant in the district's Khullar village, 80 km from here.

The slain militant has been identified as Reyaz Ahmad Deva, self-styled district commander of Hizbul Mujaheedin. He was active in south Kashmir for the past 10 years, and was also involved in the killing of three Congress party workers and IED blasts on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, a police spokesman here said.

As the militant walked into the ambush, he was asked to surrender. However, he was gunned down when he opened fire on the police.

One AK-47 rifle, ammunition and grenades were recovered from the slain guerrilla, the police spokesman added.
