The renowned Archivist S.D. Guru, former Director of Madhya Pradesh State Archives, inaugurated the Orientation Course. While speaking on the occasion Guru threw light on the history of record keeping and its management. He said the process of record management started way back in 1775 when Supreme Court passed an order for its upkeep. In 1793 the Supreme Court passed a resolution that no record of civil and criminal courts could be removed, disposed off or dispersed without the approval of competent authority. The first Record Office was established in Calcutta in 1820, he revealed, and added, hundred years later in 1920 a proposal was moved to form Indian Historical Record Commission for research purposes.

Guru said that records are integral part of any organization. They are the wheels of administration. Records management establishes standards of good management in respect of creation, control, preservation and disposition of records. The records management play a vital role for the government of the day which is accountable to its people, he added.

“The Britishers despite many drawbacks in administration knew the art of maintaining records. Many records available today which we see is the courtesy of these Britishers”, he remarked.

Sanjay Garg, Asstt. Director of Archives in the National Archives of India at the headquarters in New Delhi, while addressing the trainees from various central government departments and Public Sector Undertakings said to achieve any target there should be awareness, knowledge and inclination to do so. As such the Orientation Course strives to inculcate these values in the trainees, he added.

Garg informed that more than 1000 Departmental Records Officers from all over the country have been trained and this is the 75th i.e. jubilee Orientation Course. The training is imparted with a difference where we address a problem. The biggest problem in record management are the records itself, he opined.
