Two killed as Pakistani police foil suicide attack

Islamabad, Aug 2 (DPA) A policeman and a suicide bomber were killed Thursday when Pakistani security forces opened fire on the militant trying to attack a police training centre in the central province of Punjab, officials said.

“The suicide bomber opened fire on the police guards with a pistol when he was stopped from approaching the police recruits busy in morning exercise in the playground of training school in Sargodha district, killing one officer and injuring another,” regional police chief Hamid Mukhtar Gondal said.

The attacker was killed before he could detonate himself, the officer said.

“A bomb disposal squad was diffusing the explosive jacket of the bomber,” Gondal said, adding that at the time of the incident around 400 police recruits were present in the ground.

Islamic militants have launched a series of revenge attacks on security forces after the military killed at least 75 militants holed up at the Lal Masjid in the heart of the capital during a flush out operation three weeks ago.

More than 200 people, including 100 security personnel, have died in the post-masjid attacks.

Last month 26 people, including 15 policemen, died in a suicide attack on a police training school in Dera Ismaeel Khan in North-West Frontier Province.
