The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) is planning to make it mandatory for drivers of all slow moving vehicles, including bullock and camel carts, to have licences. They will also have to follow traffic rules.

The step is aimed at improving traffic movement in the historic city. “We have already prepared new by-laws for slow moving traffic,” a JMC official told IANS.

Under the new by-laws, licences will be issued to drivers of the carts after JMC ascertains that they do not suffer from any infectious disease.

The driver must be aged 20-50 years, should have basic knowledge of traffic rules and should not have a criminal record.

There would be restrictions on the amount of load carried by the slow moving vehicles. But parking of such carts in no parking zones would result in a fine of Rs.100. Jumping the stop line would also attract a fine of Rs.100.

The JMC will send the by-laws to the Rajasthan government for approval.
