New Delhi : India’s first dedicated English and Foreign Languages University came into force Friday, the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry said.
With the central government enforcing the English and Foreign Languages University Act, 2006, the country now has a dedicated central university for promotion and development of English and foreign languages and their literature.
“The English and Foreign Languages University at Hyderabad would be the 24th central university established by an Act of Parliament,” an HRD ministry official said.
As first step of the university, the HRD ministry appointed Abhai Maurya, a professor at Delhi University, as its first vice chancellor.
Maurya, who hails from a humble farming family in Haryana, has been a professor of Russian literature since 1988 and is the founder-head of the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Delhi.
He is the author of 12 books, both scholarly and creative, with more than 50 research papers to his credit. He has been awarded and facilitated internationally and has been actively associated with various bodies of the UNESCO.
Maurya is also a recipient of ‘A.S. Pushkin’ medal, the highest honour in the field of Russian literature and language.
