Malhotra, who has been on the run since July 27, decided to give his ‘version’ of events to Zee News at Noida on the outskirts of the capital before the CBI swooped down on the premises and took him into custody.

Malhotra is alleged to have entered into a criminal conspiracy with five Delhi Development Authority (DDA) officials in 2000-02 for fraudulently acquiring plots meant for resettlement of slum dwellers in northwest Delhi’s Dheerpur area.

Starting off as a roadside vendor, Malhotra had amassed several properties across the city.

Before surrendering, he reportedly told the news channel that his life was in “danger”.

Earlier, CBI teams fanned out across the capital searching for Malhotra and had secured a non-bailable warrant against him from a court over the weekend.

Searches at Malhotra’s home reportedly revealed the presence of 17 luxury cars with VIP number plates, Rs.1.7 million and about seven kg of gold.
