Chandigarh : Chandigarh will ban by Sep 15 the sale of wheat flour which has not been fortified with iron and folic acid, officials of the union territory (UT) administration decided here Wednesday.
The need for fortification was felt because of the problem of iron deficiency and anaemia among people here, especially children.
Recent health surveys by various government agencies had revealed iron and folic acid deficiencies among residents.
A spokesman for the administration said that a comprehensive initiative for ensuring fortification of wheat flour being sold in the city by adding micronutrients like iron and folic acid is underway.
A programme aimed at addressing nutritional deficiencies among city residents will be launched Aug 15.
