Speaking in a ceremony held on the eve of the ‘Journalist Day’ (August 8) in this central city, about 275 km south of capital Tehran, Ali-Abadi said journalists should be “honest and powerful and try to create a safe climate in the society.

“Honest journalists also make society unsafe for those who try to put it in danger,” said the vice-president.

He referred to journalists as the “open eyes” of the people.

August 8 is the anniversary of martyrdom of IRNA bureau chief in Afghanistan, Mahmoud Saremi, who was shot dead along with six Iranian diplomats in Mazari Sharif in 1998 when Iranian Consulate in the city was occupied by Taliban militants.

The day is marked as the Journalist Day in Iran.
