Washington : Former England captain David Beckham stepped up his training here but is still classified as “questionable” to make his Major League Soccer (MLS) debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy against DC United Thursday night.

After three weeks of deep tissue massage as part of his rehabilitation from ankle ligament damage, Beckham began running at the weekend and since arriving here from Toronto Tuesday has begun kicking footballs, reports The Washington Post website.

“It’s getting better,” Beckham said of his ankle during a press conference here Wednesday.

“It’s improving every day. A lot of people, including myself, want it to improve quicker.”

Galaxy spokesman Justin Pearson later said: “David crossed some balls yesterday and today, just light stuff and he’s still questionable.”

What will be in Beckham’s favour of making the Galaxy squad is that Thursday night’s game at RFK Stadium is being played on natural grass rather than the artificial FieldTurf surface used by Toronto FC at their BMO Field.

Beckham missed Sunday night’s goalless draw in the Canadian city and, ahead of the game with DC United he told reporters: “I think it’s a huge factor that it’s on grass instead of FieldTurf.

“That’s one thing that should change about the league. Every team should have grass.”

DC United, unlike weekend opponents Toronto, has natural grass, and that might increase the odds of Beckham making his much-awaited MLS debut.

The star England midfielder added: “I think it’s a huge factor that it’s on grass instead of FieldTurf. Hopefully I’ll play some part of it.”
