Ahmedabad : Gujarat was reeling under fresh monsoon fury Thursday as floods claimed five more lives while many people were evacuated, especially in the Saurashtra region. Heavy torrential rains forced Ambuja Cement to shut down operations of its plant.
Most parts of Saurashtra and Kutch continued to reel under torrential rains causing floods in several areas. Cities like Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Porbandar remained badly affected.
Five more deaths were reported from the affected areas in the 24 hours to Thursday afternoon, officials said here.
In Junagadh district there was no electricity in 40 villages, according to reports reaching the state headquarters.
The relief work by the army was in full swing even as the met office predicted heavy rains would continue in Saurashtra Friday.
Heavy rains were beginning to take its toll on manufacturing industries as well.
