Heavy rains triggered by a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal last week devastated several parts of coastal Orissa. At least 15 people were killed and over a million of people have been affected due to the monsoon fury. This was the second time this year that the state witnessed floods.

Earlier, nearly 1.5 million people were affected and 32 were killed due to floods and rain triggered by a depression in the Bay of Bengal in the last week of June and beginning of July.

The meteorological office here Thursday predicted that another low pressure is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on Friday. If that happens, the state may witness heavy rain.

An official said the state government has alerted the collectors of at least five coastal districts where fresh floods could wreak more devastation.

They have been asked to repair embankments, keep adequate food and medicine stocks, keep teams ready to distribute relief and carry out rescue operations ready to meet any eventuality, he said.
