Mumbai : Five people including three children died and two were injured when a 100-year-old building in the Grant Road area here collapsed, police said Saturday.
The five deceased, Malti (48), Pratibha (30), Anuram (7), Anushtha (5) and Anjali (3), belonged to the family of Sanjay Kumar Oza and lived in a hut behind the dilapidated Girdhar Bhavan on Dr. D.B. Marg.
The building, which collapsed Friday night, was owned by Vijay Sakarlal Shah, police said.
The occupants of Girdhar Bhavan remained unharmed as only its rear portion comprising toilets collapsed, police said, adding that the building was, however, evacuated immediately after the tragedy.
The precarious structure in the predominantly poor Pydhoni locality was constructed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) that had issued a notice to the owner for urgent repairs, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) spokesman Saudagar Jadhav told IANS.
The work of debris removal continued till Saturday evening under the supervision of senior BMC officials, Jadhav added.
