Mumbai : Five people including three children lost their lives and two others were injured when an old building in Grant Road here collapsed.
The five deceased, Malti (48), Pratibha (30), Anuram (7), Anushtha (5) and Anjali (3) belonged to the family of Manilal Oza who was an old tenant in the dilapidated Girdhar Bhavan on Dr. D.B. Marg, owned by Vijay Sakarlal Shah, police said.
The precarious structure in the predominantly poor Pydhoni locality was constructed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), that had issued a notice to the owner for urgent repairs, Saudagar Jadhav, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) spokesman, told IANS.
Most of the occupants of Girdhar Bhavan were apparently asleep when its rear portion collapsed Friday night, Jadhav said, adding that the building was evacuated immediately after the tragedy.
The work of removal of debris continued till Saturday evening under the supervision of senior BMC officers, Jadhav added.
