Ramallah : Hassan Khrisheh, the second deputy speaker of the Palestinian parliament confirmed his resignation on Monday, a day after he threatened to quit in protest against the council’s inability to convene.
“I have informed the parliamentary blocs and the acting PLC speaker about my resignation,” Khrisheh told a news conference in Ramallah.
The Hamas-dominated Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC),which seldom convenes due to the differences between the two factions of Fatah and Hamas as well as the Israeli detention of its Speaker and some 40 lawmakers, most of whom from Hamas, has never held any session since Hamas took over Gaza Strip in mid-June.
Khrisheh, who joined the parliament after the January 2006elections as a Hamas-supported independent, is the first one to walk out.
Hamas won the parliamentary elections and defeated the long-dominant President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.
