Hyderabad : The Andhra Pradesh government Sunday said it would consider reviving Andhra Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act (APCOCA) with amendments suggested by the opposition parties.
Home Minister K. Jana Reddy made the announcement to newspersons after an all-party meeting called to review the situation in the wake of twin bomb blasts that killed 42 people here.
APCOCA was brought by the then Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government in 2001 but was allowed to lapse following criticism from civil liberties groups and the opposition, which termed the law as draconian.
Leaders of the TDP and other opposition parties felt that had the government speeded up investigations into the mosque blast, Saturday’s attacks could have been prevented.
The Congress government had agreed to expedite the Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the blast at the 17th century mosque, which had claimed nine lives. “If necessary we will also order a CBI probe into the two blasts,” said Jana Reddy.
The meeting passed a resolution condemning the blasts and hailed the people of the state for maintaining calm in the face of the worst terror attacks in the state’s history.
Jana Reddy announced that an all-party peace meeting would be held on Monday in Hyderabad to condole the death of those who died in the blasts.
