Tehran : Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini on Monday advised the US justice system not to sacrifice their independence for political goals.
Hosseini protested to a US court which has issued a verdict against Iran following a complaint from a US marine who has been injured in terrorist bombing of a US base in Beirut 24 years ago.
Responding to a question about the US courts issuing unilateral verdicts against Iran, Hosseini said that the US courts have made such illegal actions several times so far.
“Iran has strongly condemned the terrorist bombing at the US base in Lebanon and any allegations about Iranian complicity in it are unfounded and lack legal credibility in absence of evidences.” He said that Iran reserves its rights to protest to the US courts against illegal actions which has tarnished prestige of the US justice system.
Asked about possible disagreement between Iran and Iraq on the joint oil wells, he said that occasionally some problems arise in the border areas which have been investigated and agreements have been reached between the two parties.
“Both Iranian and Iraqi foreign ministries are working to reinforce security in the border areas. God willing, the 1975 Algiers treaty which is a comprehensive accord will be implemented putting an end to such problems,” he said.
He said that in order to remove any misunderstanding between the two countries over the oil wells in the border areas, Iran will host a delegation from Iraqi Ministry of Oil soon.
Commenting on a border security pact signed by Iranian and Iraqi officials, he said that the security pact concerns patrolling of both Iranian and Iraqi coast guards at Arvand Rud to fight the bandits and smugglers.
Hosseini said that both Iranian and Iraqi security officials in their meeting in Tehran from August 13-15 adopted an action plan on patrolling of the coast guards in the Arvand waterway.
A reporter asked about lack of interest from Iraqi side to carry out dredging operation in Arvand Rud waterway, Hosseini said that the issue has also been envisaged in the 1975 Algiers treaty.
