Baghdad : The Iraqi Foreign Ministry has summoned the Iranian Ambassador in Baghdad Hassan Kazhemi Qomi to hand him a formal protest against his country’s bombardment of Iraqi Kurd towns.
The bombardment aroused panic among innocent civilians in the border areas and rendered them homeless, a statement by the ministry Tuesday quoted undersecretary of the ministry Muhammad Al-Hajj Hammoud as saying to Qumi.
Iran’s decison to resort to military force will harm the neighbourly ties between the two countries, according to the statement.
Hammoud asked Iran to refrain from repetition of such attacks that terrorized inhabitants of the Al-Sulaimaniya and Irbil governorates.
On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki condemned as “violation of Iraq’s sovereignty” the Iranian and Turkish military attacks against border areas in Iraqi Kurdistan region.
“We hope the (Iranian and Turkish) brothers would share intelligence information with us, if they have any, in order to work together to remove risks according to agreements with them,” he told reporters here.
“We will ask our Foreign Ministry to inform them of our protest in order to prevent any future repetition of the attacks,” he pointed out.
The move of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry follows the emergency session held by the parliament of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, north Iraq, earlier Tuesday to discuss the Iranian and Turkish attacks on Kurd towns.
Chairman of the session Adnan Al-Mufti termed the attacks as “unjustifiable.”
“Problems can not be solved this way,” he told the session which was also attended by Kurdistan Prime Minister Negerfan Al-Barzani, Minister of Interior Othman Hajji Mahmoud and Al-Sulaimaniya Governor Dana Ahmed Majid.
The towns of Hajj Umran in Sulaimaniya and Qadhaa Qalaa in Irbil were severely hit by the recurrent Iranian and Turkish bombardments which forced large numbers of their inhabitants to flee.
