Ahmedabad : Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will leave for Beijing next Wednesday on a four-day visit to attend the ‘summer Davos’ summit at Dalian in China organised by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
At the three-day summit beginning Sep 6, Modi will be accompanied by D. Rajagopalan, principal secretary for industries and mines, Gauri Kumar, state industries commissioner, Atanu Chakraborty, secretary for tourism and small scale industries, and K. Kailashnathan, chief minister’s principal secretary.
State government officials said Modi will use the opportunity to hard-sell Gujarat as a progressive state and ideal investment destination.
The summit is the inaugural annual meet of “new champions” which the WEF at its annual meeting in Davos in January this year said have emerged and are re-shaping business and transforming society.
Through the summit the WEF in partnership with the Chinese government and industry intends to create a powerful platform for interaction and cooperation between traditional and new actors, between East and West.
Gujarat is among the partners along with many of the world’s leading companies and organisations, which will support the “new champions” in their drive to develop a global reach while implementing world-class governance structures.
The state is the only geographical entity and the sole Indian state that figure in the partners’ list. From the India corporate sector, the biggest firm Reliance Industries and IT bellwether Infosys Technologies are among the partners.
The “new champions” comprise two groups. At the core is a new generation of companies, which WEF calls global growth companies capable of fundamentally changing the global competitive landscape. These business champions come primarily from rapidly growing emerging markets, such as China and India, but also include fast movers from developed economies.
In addition to the business entities, “new champions” include the next generation of global leaders, fast-growing regions, competitive cities and technology pioneers from around the globe.
The summit, which will have over 1,700 participants, will be joined by international government leaders, leaders of the world’s most competitive cities and the fastest growing regions and states.
