Over 40 insurgents killed, 14 arrested in Afghanistan

Kabul : More than 40 Taliban militants were killed and 14 arrested by Afghan forces backed by NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in separate operations Saturday and Sunday in southern province of Kandahar, local police said.

According to Sayed Aqa Saqib, provincial police chief, the Afghan National Army (ANA) and ISAF launched joint two-day operation targeting Taliban insurgents in Shah Wali Kot district of the southern Afghan province. At least 35 militants were killed and 10 arrested in this operation.

“Despite ISAF’s airstrike in the northern part of Kandahar, there were no casualties in local civilians,” Saqib said.

In another gun battle between Afghan troops and the Taliban fighters in the Jalai district Saturday night, five insurgents were killed while four militants, including their commander Mullah Faizulah, were arrested.
