Ajmer : The local police have launched investigation into the alleged mass marriage of 52 children in Ghugra village in Ajmer district, Rajasthan, Thursday.
“We have started investigations into it and would submit a report in next couple of days. If allegations are found true, action would be taken against those who are responsible for it,” a police official said.
On Thursday, 52 children were married off in a grand ceremony, which was witnessed by thousands of people from the Gujjar community, local media had reported. People had collected on the pretext of organising a meeting of Gujjars to discuss the community’s demand for being treated as a scheduled tribe.
The administration was unaware about the event.
Police have started recording statements of villagers and are collecting photographs and news reports of the event in newspapers.
The decision has been taken by the administration after the villagers denied conducting any such marriages.
The event has been criticised by social activists who alleged that despite claims of success in reducing the number of child marriage cases by the government, this age-old social evil is still persistent across the state.
