Gujarat sees 60 percent polling

New Delhi : Nearly 60 percent of 17.8 million electorate voted Tuesday in the first phase of elections to pick a new 182-seat Gujarat assembly, the Election Commission said.

“Nearly 59 to 60 percent of people voted today,” Deputy Election Commissioner J.P. Prakash told reporters at the end of polling. He said the balloting was “by and large peaceful and orderly”.

There was only one case of violence when supporters of two candidates clashed in Rajkot in Saurashtra region, he said.

A total of 87 assembly constituencies went to the polls Tuesday spread over 14 districts of Saurashtra, Kutch and south Gujarat regions. The second and final phase of the polling is due Sunday.
