Sudanese Presidential Office declares end to crisis in South

Khartoum : The Office of President of Sudan has declared the end to the crisis between the national government and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), with which is has a power-sharing deal, and the resolution of all outstanding issues.

This came at a meeting of the Presidency last Wednesday at the Guest House. Sudan’s First Vice-President and President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir, is due to issue a decision on resumption of the ministers and advisers of the SPLM to their work in the National Unity Government.

The Presidency meeting affirmed working to creating a mechanism toward implementation of Abyei Protocol, stating that the consultation on all this is to begin as of Saturday.

The co-chairman of the six-member committee, Pagan Amom, said in a press statement here Tuesday that the meeting of the Presidency had praised the efforts of the six-member committee and the recommendations that it reached that helped the Presidency to issue many decisions.

The meeting referred to lessons that resulted from the crisis experience, especially with regard to the optimum utilization of the available mechanisms for solving problems that may occur between the two partners from time to time.

The meeting issued a number of important decisions of strategic dimension, and underscored the commitment to implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in letter and spirit, boosting peace and discarding war.

The meeting affirmed the keenness to realization of national reconciliation, as stipulated in the Constitution for consolidation of peace and democracy as well as the agreement on a social accord between all the political forces, through convocation of a national conference.

The meeting of the Presidency assured the adherence to the principle of the rule of law by implementation of the Constitution and the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), especially the Document of Rights, boosting the independence of the judiciary and working for harmony of the laws at all the government levels with the Constitution.

The Presidency meeting affirmed the commitment to complete the deployment of forces, especially in the south, the Nuba Mountains and the Blue Nile and securing the petroleum areas by the Joint Forces.

The meeting affirmed the commitment to implement the decisions of the Petroleum Commission and reactivation of the specialized committees and enhancing transparency in dealings in a manner that satisfy all.

The Presidency assured the keenness to provide funding for the Borders’ Commission and the Population Census and establishing a mechanism for development in South Sudan, besides another mechanism to handle the pending issues in South Kordofan and the Blue Nile.

The meeting pointed that despite surpassing the crisis, the issue of Abyei is still awaiting solution, affirming working for finding a mechanism to implement Abyei Protocol, and that consultations on this issue is to begin as of Saturday, as Abyei issue is an important one but at the same a complicated issue and the two parties obtain the strong will to reach solution of this issue.

Meanwhile, it was announced that First Vice-President Salva Kiir Mayardit would begin on Wednesday a visit to Ethiopia during which he is to meet the Ethiopian leadership.

A high-ranking delegation from the SPLM arrived in Addis Ababa Monday to prepare for the visit of Salva Kiir Mayardit on Wednesday. The delegation comprised Deng Alor and David Deng, Minister of Roads and Transport at the Government of Southern Sudan and Minister of Regional Co-operation.
