The conference would take place in March or April in Bethlehem, Brown said Tuesday after meeting Mahmoud Abbas here.

The conference would follow on from the international donor conference in Paris and would be an opportunity to see whether a viable Palestinian state could be established.

The year 2008 offered great opportunities for the crisis-stricken region, Brown said.

Britain would do all it could to contribute to progress in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, he said.

Brown stressed that attacks from the Palestinian Territories on Israel had to stop.

Donors pledged some $7.4 billion to the Palestinian Territories at the Paris conference.
