Mumbai : Towering over the rest of the field, the slim and frail looking Rashid Khan took a whopping 13-shot lead at the end of the third round in Sunfeast Western India Junior golf championship at the par-70 Bombay Presidency Golf Club (BPGC) here Thursday.
Rashid shot a three-under 67 to move to 14-under par 196. “I am aiming to break my idol Ashok Kumar’s record of 19-under,” said Rashid.
With Rashid way ahead, the battle is essentially for the second place with Amanjyot Singh bringing in a card of 68 to be placed second at one-under 209 and Rahul Bakshi managing a round of three-under 67 to be third at 215.
Bangalore lad Khalin Joshi and Vicky Sharma from Delhi were tied for the fourth spot at 221. Wasim Khan was sole sixth at 222.
S. Chikkarangappa was leading in Category B with a total of 213 and was third overall. Rahul Ravi emerged as the leader in Category C after matching the day’s best of 67 for a three-day total of 225. Piyush Sangwan with a total of 155 after two rounds.
Rashid began in superb style making a birdie on the opening hole. Giving a great display of iron play, he attacked the pins. “Whatever the situation, I usually like to attack rather than defend,” said Rashid.
After his birdie was nullified on the fifth when he missed a par from just short of the green, Rashid made consecutive birdies on the seventh and eighth but had a bogey on the ninth. However Rashid had a better back nine making three birdies against a solitary bogey to finish three-under 69. “I could have saved at least four strokes today had I not missed the small putts,” he said.
Meanwhile, Amanjyot made a hat-trick of birdies beginning from the eighth before saving strokes on the 12th and 18th. In between he had a string of four bogeys one on his front nine and three on the back nine.
