Sanaa : Yemeni Presidency declared on Saturday three days of mourning starting today for demise of Parliament Speaker Abdullah bin Hussein Al-Ahmar who passed away at the age of 74.
The official news agency, SABA’, said Al-Ahmar, who was a national, Arab and Islamic stalwart in service of the nation, died at King Faisal Hospital in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, after suffering from a serious disease.
A presidential statement praised Al-Ahmar as a leader who struggled for the unification of the Yemeni people, adding that his body would be transported to the capital, Sanaa, on Monday.
Al-Ahmar, born in 1934, had been Speaker of Parliament since 1993 and he also headed Supreme Council for the Yemeni reformist gathering party established in 1990. The official also was the head of the popular committee supporting Kuwait against the Iraqi invasion in the 90s.
Al-Ahmar took served in several key positions such as interior, local, administrative posts, in addition to his occupation as parliament speaker.
