Jaswinder Singh suffered 60 percent burns, the police said. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital here.

Jaswinder Singh was part of around 25 Dera followers sitting on an indefinite fast outside the deputy commissioner's office since last week to protest against allegations that the Dera chief had offended the religious sentiments of Sikhs. The Punjab Police have registered a case against Ram Rahim Singh.

The sect chief, who commands a wide following, became a controversial figure after dressing up as Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh. That angered Sikhs and sparked clashes between Sikh groups and Dera supporters.
