The suspect "was detained" by police in Brisbane, while trying to board a flight to Singapore, according to Channel Seven News station.

The report came after the BBC said an eighth person had been seized overseas.

British media said eight people were being held in connection with the suspected failed Al Qaida plot to carry out a series of car bombings in London and Scotland last week.

One of the suspects was identified as Bilal Abdulla, a doctor, who had trained and qualified in Iraq in 2004. Another was reported to be Mohammed Asha, also a doctor, qualified in Jordan the same year.

On Saturday, a burning car was driven into the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport, Scotland, one day after police in London defused two car bombs, packed with petrol, nails and gas cylinders in a major shopping and nightlife area.

The police described the Glasgow attack as a "terrorist incident" and linked it to the incidents in London's West End Friday morning.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown told the BBC, "It's obvious that we have a group of people – not just in this country, but around the world – who are prepared at any time to inflict … maximum damage on civilians."

People still need to be "constantly vigilant" against what was a "long-term and sustained threat", he warned, vowing to "fight it in a number of different ways – militarily, by security, by police, by intelligence."
