Nepalese favour republican form of Government : Survey

Kathmandu : Most of the Nepalese citizens favour a republican form of government, with 50 percent of the respondent of a survey wanting the immediate abolition of the monarchy.

Fifty percent of the respondents of a recent survey said the monarchy must be abolished immediately while 29 percent favoured monarchy with limited powers, 5 percent favoured active monarchy and 13 percent did not reply.

The survey showed that 41 percent of the people blamed the ruling eight parties for the delay in holding the constituent assembly election in which some 90 percent were ready to participate on November 22.

The Survey revealed a fractured verdict with the Nepali Congress expected to get 18 percent votes, CPM-UML 14.3 percent, CPM-Maoist 14.5 percent, Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) 2.4 percent and Nepali Congress Democratic 1.3 percent votes.

The survey by the Nepal International Electoral Forum in partnership with Nepal Law Society and Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal was conducted in 66 districts, 157 VDCs, 43 municipalities and 1501 households between March 1 and May 15, 2007, the nepalnews online said.

The poll showed that 63 percent of the respondents had not received adequate information regarding the CA polls.

Around 50 percent were found to be unaware about the concept of federalism while 16 percent said they wanted federal system and 10 percent disagreed with the notion.
