The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government ordered a magisterial inquiry after the three died and 21 other children fell ill at the school in Padamnabhpur village in Durg. Local authorities said the deaths were due to food poisoning.

"On Saturday night, about 40 kids consumed stale food at the school hostel and started vomiting. Three died Sunday while 21 other kids, around six years old, were taken to the government hospital at Durg town in a critical condition," a senior education department official told IANS.

The school was being run by a private organisation under the government-run Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and had about 40 tribal students below 14 yrs of age, mostly school dropouts.

"The condition of the 21 students is better," said Ajay Dani, civil surgeon at the Durg hospital.
