London : Jeev Milkha Singh, India's lone contender in the British Open golf championships, made a disastrous start Thursday, shooting six over par 77 at Carnoustie, Scotland.
The Indian, placed a lowly 128th, must play some exceptional golf Friday to make the cut.
The 2006 Asian Tour Order of Merit winner started with a birdie on the opening hole of the par-71 Carnoustie Golf Club course, but soon found himself in trouble with bogeys on the third and fifth holes.
Jeev completed with the front nine at one over but bogeys again on the 10th, 11th and 18th and a double bogey on the 17th nearly put him out of contention for weekend action.
Paul McGinley holds the clubhouse lead at four under par 67 with four players tied in second place one stroke behind.
Nine players, including world number one Tiger Woods and Korean K.J. Choi, are tied for sixth place at two under 69 on the opening day.
