Many critical issues in Brown’s first meeting with Bush

London : Prime Minister Gordon Brown will hold "wide ranging discussions" with George W Bush when he meets the US President for the first time since taking over from Tony Blair last month, according to his office.

The discussion will include "trade talks, climate change, Darfur, Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Russia," Brown's official spokesman said when confirming that the prime minister would travel to Camp David early next week.

Speaking at his daily briefing on Thursday, the spokesman also acknowledged that the talks will cover Bush's plans for a missile defence system in Europe following the UK's announcement of its agreement to allow the US to use a monitoring station.

Brown met Bush informally in Washington earlier this year, but his visit will be the first face-to-face talks since he assumed power on June 27.

Speculation has been that the new British premier may try to distance himself from Blair's close relationship with the US president.

This was added to by Brown's decision to travel first to see French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin before heading to Washington.

Last week, Foreign Office Minister Mark Malloch Brown told the Daily Telegraph that Brown wanted a more impartial foreign policy and said that it was very unlikely his relationship with Bush will be "joined together at the hip."
