APP quoted hospital sources as saying that a 22-year old policeman died at a hospital here early Saturday.

Eight policemen have died in the suicide attack, which apparently targeted police personnel, according to officials.

Over 60 were injured in the blast that also damaged several shops in a busy market.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The powerful blast took place when hundreds of people gathered around Lal Masjid in protest against the recent government operation there.

Some religious activists who came to Lal Masjid Friday turned furious and clashed with police. Some people pelted policemen with stones and a number of people remained inside the mosque, painting the mosque red again. The government had painted the mosque white earlier this week.

This is the second suicide attack in the capital of Pakistan in less then two weeks. A suicide blast rocked another marketplace in Islamabad on the evening of July 17, killing 16 people and injuring over 40.

Since early July a series of attacks across the country has left over 185 dead, mostly security personnel.
