India won 25-7, 25-18, 25-13.

The hosts had finished second behind winners Canada in the inaugural Commonwealth Volleyball Championship in London in 1981.

Sanjay Kumar and G. Pradeep made some fantastic spikes and blocks as India walked away with opening set 25-7.

The home team decided to experiment in the next set and allowed Bangladesh to come back with the visiting team's captain A.M. Sheikh showing the way with his smashes. However, after two time-outs India regrouped to take the set 25-18.

The third set was again one-sided.

Indian coach G.E. Sridharan said he was testing his players after assessing his opponents in the first set. He was confident that the players who made some mistakes would recover before the match against the tough Nigerians.

Bangladesh coach Golam Rasul Khan said lack of experience and the height factor worked against them.
