Banda Aceh : Vice President M Jusuf Kalla said the Aceh people should have a common perception about the implementation of Islamic `syariah` (laws) in their region.
"Of course, we should first have the same perception on Islamic syariah," the vice president said in a dialogue with a number of university students here on Saturday.
Kalla made the statement in response to a question from one of the students on the commitment of the Indonesian government to the implementation of Islamic syariah in the province.
The vice president said basically Islamic syariah was already being implemented by Indonesian Muslims in their daily life.
"Because as Muslims we are obliged to implement Islamic syariah," he said.
He said the implementation of Islamic syariah should not be understood narrowly such as by having Islamic calligraphies in government offices.
The vice president also challenged the students on whether there were some Islamic laws which could not be implemented in Aceh so far.
"So, we must not have a narrow understanding on Islamic syariah, and it`s dangerous to push the issue through regional regulations," he said.
Kalla also reminded the students that their main task was to study and they should not waste their time by staging unnecessary demonstrations.
