The hospital launched a number of Chest Pain Clinics here last week to address the need of preventing the loss of time in order to save lives.

Anil Maini, president, corporate development, Apollo Group of Hospitals, said: "The first few hours after the heart attack is the 'golden hour' and treatment given immediately makes huge difference in terms of mortality and quality of life."

Heart attack occurs when the blood supply to part of the heart muscle itself – the myocardium – is severely reduced or stopped. The reduction or stoppage happens when one or more of the coronary arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle are blocked, Maini told a press conference here Friday.

"It may not be possible for a patient to reach a tertiary care centre within the golden hour period. To overcome the barrier of distance and time, we have started associating ourselves with different nursing homes.

"Known as 'Apollo Gleneagles Chest Pain Centres', these healthcare organisations will have trained personnel and necessary infrastructure to diagnose the cause of chest pain, provide emergency treatment and refer the patients to a tertiary care centre for definitive management if heart attack is confirmed," said Maini.

"This will ensure that no matter wherever the patient is, he/she will not be deprived of quality medical care," he said.

Arijit Bose, a doctor with Apollo Hospitals, said: "With the infrastructure of emergency rooms capable of handling any cardiac emergency, dedicated ambulances functioning round the clock, the cardiac care centres will be able to provide with on-the-spot diagnosis, treatment and follow-up plan for each patient.
