Baghdad : US Assistant Secretary of State John Negroponte arrived in Baghdad Tuesday morning and met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, independent Voices of Iraq reported, citing a cabinet media source.
Negroponte is expected to meet with Iraqi government officials later Tuesday to discuss recent political and security developments in Iraq, the source added.
No further details were immediately available.
The visit by Negroponte, who was his country's ambassador to Iraq in 2005, came amidst growing calls from a Democrat-dominated Congress to the Iraqi government to achieve progress on issues like the division of oil proceeds and national reconciliation.
Negroponte arrived only a day after incoming British prime minister Gordon Brown paid a visit to the Iraqi capital Baghdad, during which he met Iraq's President Jalal Talabani, al-Maliki and other Iraqi officials.
