"This is an idea (for) which we need to explore the possibilities," Ban told reporters Wednesday after a monthly luncheon with the 15 members of the UN Security Council.

He said he exchanged views with the council members on the issue during the luncheon.

Many issues concerning a deployment, if any, such as its location and mission, are still not clear at this time, he added.

Ban said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas asked him to consider sending a multinational force when they spoke over the telephone Tuesday.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert "also raised this issue", he said, adding that he has yet to discuss it in more detail with the countries concerned.

Fierce infighting between rivals – the Fatah and Hamas movements – continued Wednesday for the third consecutive day in Gaza, with the death toll reaching at least 60.
