The cops from the Athagarh police station, some 60 km from here, allegedly went to the house of Bhaskara Behera in nearby Rajnagar village and beat him severely Thursday night.

Behera became unconscious and the policemen themselves took him to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

While the cops said they had mistaken Behera for a fugitive, villagers were furious and laid a siege at the police station the next day to register their protest.

The state government then ordered an inquiry into the incident.

All four policemen- assistant sub-inspector Narendra Kumar Das and constables Artatrana Naik, Ashok Kumar Jena and Sribatsa Pradhan – were suspended and booked Saturday on the charge of murder, a senior district police official told IANS.
