Kabul : The Afghan government Tuesday admitted that drug and terrorism are linked but assured to eliminate the menace of opium from the country.
Presidential spokesman Mohammad Karim Rahimi told reporters Tuesday that the government is determined to fight against drug till its eradication from the country.
His comment coincided with the international anti-drug day during which the UN Secretary General in his message called for collective efforts to overcome the menace.
On Monday Christina Oguz the representative of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) told journalists that Afghanistan was the world's biggest producer of opium.
Drug trade and its income, she added, would also benefit Taliban-led insurgency in the country.
Afghanistan produced an output of 6,100 tones of opium in 2006, which accounted for 92 percent of the world's total supply. Opium production is expected to further grow this year.
Afghan presidential spokesman admitted that drug and terrorism are linked to each other and that is why in the militancy-plagued provinces the drug outcome is higher than in peaceful provinces.
