The bill called the AERA Bill, 2007 will “enable the government to set up Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA),” explained Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, after a union cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“The regulatory authority will fix, review and approve tariff structure for aeronautical services and also will monitor pre-determined performance standards at Indian airports,” he said.

The setting up of a regulatory authority for airports has become necessary in view of the coming up of privately owned and run airports, specially in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, explained government sources.

But the airports and airstrips maintained and run by the army, navy, air force and other paramilitary airports will remain out of the jurisdiction of the proposed regulatory authority, stated Dasmunsi.
