New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday recovered Rs.3.5 million in raids conducted at the premises of alleged corrupt Central Public Works Department (CPWD) officials and contractors.
"During the searches conducted at their premises sufficient documents indicating a cartel formed by the contractors and the CPWD officials were recovered. Hidden cash of Rs.3.5 million was also found from various parts of the house of a CPWD executive engineer B. Subramani," a statement issued by the investigating agency here said.
Meanwhile, sleuths of the anti-corruption branch Friday conducted raids at 10 different places in Chennai, Madurai and Puducherry after registering three cases of corruption against CPWD officials in Chennai.
According to the CBI statement, one of the case registered by the investigating agency alleged that CPWD officials conspired with the contractors and allowed them to substitute certain costly materials for construction with cheaper varieties causing a loss of Rs.1.3 million to the department.
In the second case, an executive engineer and three contractors entered into a conspiracy and the work of external painting at higher rates was awarded, thereby causing losses worth Rs.500,000 to CPWD.
In the third case, the officials awarded horticulture work at higher rates to the contractors.
