According to officials, the BSP was leading in 19 of the 55 seats where trends were available. The Samajwadi Party was a close second with 16 and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at 13.

The Congress, which had expected to improve upon its 2002 showing, was doing badly, leading only in three seats.

Balloting for the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh assembly took place in the country's most populous state from April 7 until May 8. Some 50 million voted in the polls.
