Jammu : A soldier died Saturday in a gunfight at the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir between the Indian Army and a group of militants attempting to enter the Indian territory, a defence official said.
The gunfight in the Keri sector in the Pirpanjal range of the Himalayas bordering Rajouri and Poonch districts began at 9 a.m. and lasted for little over an hour.
"It was a gunfight between a group of militants that had sought to sneak into the Indian side taking cover of thick forests in Keri area along the LoC," Defence spokesman Lt. Col. Goswami said here.
"We lost one soldier and another was injured," he said. The army did not know about the casualties on the other side.
The spokesman said the incident at the LoC was "in no manner a violation of the ceasefire" that is in place between the Indian and Pakistani armies since November 2003.
