"Three gunmen in a car opened fire late Saturday at Maj. Haiys al-Jubouri, commander of a police commando battalion in the province, while he was driving his car in the Shirqat town, 280 km north of the capital," Colonel Hassan Ahmed said.

Jubouri was killed along with another police captain who was accompanying him in his car during the attack, the source said.

In a separate incident, gunmen driving a car shot dead Captain Makki Ismail, a police officer in the provincial police, while he was travelling in his car on a main road near Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, Ahmed said.

In Baghdad, three more policemen were injured when a roadside bomb went off near their vehicle in the Kasrah neighborhood in northern the capital, police said.

Insurgents frequently attack Iraqi security and police forces, accusing them of collaborating with the U.S. occupation.
