London : A British soldier was killed by insurgents in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence reported in London.
Further details of the incident were not released.
The latest death on Monday brings the total number of British soldiers killed since being deployed in Afghanistan in November 2001 to 56.
Violence has been on the rise in Afghanistan for the past several weeks and on Sunday the Taliban had announced a countrywide operation against government and foreign forces.
The Taliban-led fighting has left more than 1,700 people dead, mostly insurgents, so far this year.
