Kalyan axed in BJP reshuffle

New Delhi : Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh, who led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a dismal defeat in the state assembly elections this month, was Tuesday replaced by Arun Jaitley as the party's state in-charge.

Former BJP president M. Venkaiah Naidu who was given the task of supervising the Uttar Pradesh elections was also sidelined in the latest reshuffle in the party.

General secretary Ananth Kumar retains charge of Madhya Pradesh while former Maharashtra deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde has been given the charge of Rajasthan. Both states are ruled by the party.

Vice-president Yashwant Sinha has been entrusted with party affairs in Karnataka where the BJP hopes to secure the reins of power from coalition partner Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) under the arrangement between the two parties.

Former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Shanta Kumar will look after Jammu and Kashmir, former Delhi chief minister Sahib Singh Verma will be in charge of Punjab and Chandigarh while former central minister Vijay Goel will oversee party affairs in Haryana.

Former Uttar Pradesh minister Kalraj Mishra will look after Bihar, where the BJP is in power in alliance with the Janata Dal-United (JD-U).
