Zvjezdan Misimovic gave Nuremberg an early lead Wednesday night, but Hungarian Sandor Torghelle equalised for the home side Jena in the 54th minute.

Australian Joshua Kennedy gave the visitors the lead again five minutes into extra time, but the Bundesliga side again allowed Jena back into the game with a late equaliser through Robert Mueller, six minutes from the end of extra time.

In the penalty shoot-out all five Jena players converted their spot kicks, while Dominik Reinhardt missed for Nuremberg.

Luca Toni, World Cup winner with Italy, scored a brace for Bayern Munich as they beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1.

The striker benefited from a mistake by Gladbach goalkeeper Christofer Heimeroth who failed to clear a cross from the left from Lukas Podolski, allowing Toni to put his side ahead two minutes after the restart.

Ten minutes later Toni scored with a long-range effort that gave Heimeroth no chance.

Marcel Ndjeng brought the second division side back into the game with a terrific goal from 30 metres in the 70th minute, but Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who had come on for Toni eight minutes earlier, put matters beyond doubt with an 83rd minute header.

Meanwhile, Germany striker Mario Gomez spared VfB Stuttgart — defending Bundesliga champions and last year’s losing cup finalists — the blushes with a late goal in extra time to send his team through to the third round with a 3-2 victory against Paderborn, lying bottom in the second division.

Two goals by Thomas Hitzlsperger in the space of five minutes in the first half gave the home side a comfortable lead, but Paderborn came back strongly in the second half.

Erwin Koen and Nils Doering levelled matters with two quick goals in the 66th and 69th minutes. As neither side managed another goal, the game had to go into extra time with Gomez settling matters two minutes from the end.

Arminia Bielefeld also needed extra time to beat second division opposition, winning 2-1 in Koblenz.

Bundesliga sides Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund also qualified for the next round after beating fellow first division clubs MSV Duisburg and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.

In Bremen, an impressive second half performance saw Werder advance with a 4-0 victory, with second-half goals by Tim Borowski (59), Hugo Almeida (68), Markus Rosenberg (79) and John Mosquera (87).

Borussia Dortmund fell behind against Frankfurt in the first half, but impressed in the second 45 minutes as Markus Brzenska and Mladen Petric scored the goals that took them through to the next round.

In other matches, SV Hamburg beat second division SC Freiburg 3-1, while third division Rot Weiss Essen stunned Kaiserslautern, who play a division above them, 2-1.
