Mohali : Pakistani batsman Younis Khan — whose 110-ball 117 made the difference and led to Pakistan’s win over India here in a closely fought one-day international (ODI) here –chose to dedicate his century to former Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer.
“I would like to dedicate this century to our former coach Bob Woolmer. He always encouraged me to go out and make centuries,” Khan said after Pakistan won with just a ball to spare in the 50-overs a side match Thursday night.
Khan’s innings brought Pakistan close to the target of 322 runs set by India and even after his exit in the 46th over, other batsmen were able to finish the game on a happy note for the team.
The thrilling ODI was a high scoring game — with 643 runs being scored. While Khan got his century, Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar was unlucky to get out on 99.
Woolmer, a former England player settled in South Africa, was Pakistan’s coach till February this year when he died in mysterious circumstances in his hotel room in Jamaica (West Indies) during the cricket World Cup being played there. The probe into his death, termed by some as a murder, is still on.
The coach died just after Pakistan’s early exit from the World Cup in the league stage of the biggest tournament in cricket.
