Ranchi : Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and former India women’s hockey team captain Sumari Tete were honoured with Jharkhand Ratan award on the seventh establishment day of the state here Thursday.
Dhoni could not attend the ceremony as India were playing a one-day match against Pakistan in Gwalior Thursday. Pan Singh, father of Dhoni, received the award on behalf of his son at Morabadi ground of Ranchi.
Chief Minister Madhu Koda presented the award to Pan Singh and Tete. The award includes a letter of recognition for their outstanding performance in their field and a cash reward of Rs.500,000.
Jharkhand government had announced to honour Dhoni with the award after he was elevated as captain of Indian one-day squad.
Tete was the captain of Indian women’s hockey team in 2004 when it won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games.
“This is a great moment for me. Jharkhand government should give such awards to other hockey players also,” said Tete.
